This flea bitten gray has made me the rider that I am today. We got him in 2018 and at the time I thought I was quite the rider but I was green, green, green. Which in hindsight wasn't a great combination because he is very forward and strong headed horse. Years later I started to understand that this horse's sky is the limit yet he chooses to always match his rider's ability. Whenever I would have an outside project and he would sit in the pasture for a few months I would come back to him a better rider and he would instantly match it. For this reason I would say he would make an amazing mount for an intermediate or advanced rider but would not be a great fit with a green rider.
Over the years I have tried everything under the sun to find my niche and Smokey Jay let me do it all with him. He has patiently stand by while I tried roping, ranching, trail riding, skijoring, dressage, jumpers, hunters, liberty, pole bending and barrel racing. Turns out he is really really fast and I'm not a fan of speed so we ended up sticking to the hunter and jumper ring. Which he absolutely excels in.
I am hoping to find him a home that will either enable him to pursue his desire to run fast as the wind (barrels or poles) or to help him flourish his talent in the jumping rings. He has been showing 2'3" at schooling shows and schooling 2'6" at home. He has scope for so much more but I'm not brave enough for it. I have free jumped him at 3'3" (1 meter) and it was absolutely no problem for him.
Smokey Jay and I have made millions of mountain miles together. He is super sure footed and has saved me on rockslides, mud pits, fast waters and more. He is great to ride on the trail by himself but gets a little dumb when you're riding with others and he can't be the front leader. Making him not ideal for gathering cows and such.
This incredible gelding has always been amazing on the ground and I trust my four dogs and my toddler to run around him while he's tied up or in the field any day of the week. He is UTD on vaccinations and teeth and has never given me any lameness or health issues as long as we've had him.
He is a 2012 grade quarter horse that looks like he is sky high but stands only at 15.3hands tall.
When we say all around we actually mean all around - all disciplines. Been there done that and fast as..
